Zakat in Brief

Who pays?

  • A Muslim adult of sound mind
  • Owning wealth above the nisab
  • Held for one full lunar year

How much?

  • 2.5% of saved cash, gold, silver & business stock
  • ~10% on irrigated crops, 5% on watered
  • Not due on your house, car or personal use

Who receives? (9:60)

  • The poor & the needy
  • Those in debt & stranded travellers
  • Those employed to collect & distribute it
  • Hearts to be reconciled, freeing captives, and in Allah's cause

Why it purifies

Wealth is a trust. Zakat cuts greed from the giver, heals envy in the receiver, and circulates blessing through the whole ummah. The hand that gives never goes empty.

Zakat vs Sadaqah

Zakat is the obligatory 2.5% with fixed rules. Sadaqah is any voluntary charity — a coin, a smile, removing harm from the road. Do both.

The warning

"And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment." (9:34). Zakat is not charity — it is the right of the poor in your wealth.
