شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ

Ramadan

"The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was revealed…" — Qur'an 2:185. The month that rewrites the year.

Live from Lusaka's masjids

The Iftaar Azaan Radar

Every day the radar listens from ten minutes before maghrib until ten after, across every Lusaka masjid that streams — and plays the first azaan the moment it is called.

Open the listening room — it detects the maghrib azaan live across the masjids and plays it automatically.

Du'as for Iftaar

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

"O Allah, for You I fasted and with Your provision I break my fast."

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

"The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, in shaa Allah." — Abu Dawud

The du'a between the azaan and the iqamah is not rejected — and the fasting person's du'a at iftaar is never turned away. (Tirmidhi)

Iftaar & Suhoor Times — the Whole Month

Gold rows are the last ten nights; marked nights are the odd nights when Laylat al-Qadr is sought. Moon sighting may shift the month by a day — and that is mercy. Times follow your town's coordinates, not a guess.

The Rules of Fasting

What breaks the fast

  • Eating or drinking deliberately
  • Anything reaching the stomach
  • Vomiting on purpose
  • Breaking the intention to fast

What does NOT break it

  • Forgetting and eating — finish and continue!
  • Rinsing the mouth & nose in wudu
  • Swallowing your own saliva
  • Medical injections (not nourishing), toothbrush, kohl

Who is excused

  • The sick & travellers (make up later)
  • Women in menses/post-natal (make up later)
  • Elderly & chronically ill → fidyah (feed one poor person per day)
  • Children before puberty — but let them practise!

Sunnahs that sweeten it

  • Suhoor — "In it there is barakah" (Bukhari)
  • Break the fast with dates or water, promptly
  • Guard the tongue — a fast without it is only hunger
  • Taraweeh, Qur'an, sadaqah, i'tikaf

The nightly du'as

At suhoor: intend in the heart — "I fast tomorrow for the sake of Allah."

At iftar: ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ — "Thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, in sha Allah." (Abu Dawud)

Laylat al-Qadr

"The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." (97:3) — hunt it in the odd nights of the last ten. Its du'a: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي — "O Allah, You are Pardoning and love pardon, so pardon me."
