وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

Akhlaq — Beautiful Character

"And indeed, you are upon a great character." — Qur'an 68:4. "I was sent to perfect good manners." — Ahmad

The greeting

Spread the salam — it is love between hearts. The rider greets the walker, the young greets the old, and the reply is greater than the greeting. Add "wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" and the reward multiplies.

Eating

  • Say Bismillah, eat with the right hand, from what is nearest
  • Never criticise food — the Prophet ﷺ never once did
  • Fill a third with food, a third with water, a third with air
  • End with Alhamdulillah

The tongue

  • Speak truth or stay silent
  • No backbiting — "would you eat the flesh of your dead brother?" (49:12)
  • No mocking, no nicknames that wound
  • "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." — Bukhari

Parents

  • Allah placed their rights right after His own (17:23)
  • No "uff" — not even a sigh of impatience
  • Speak gently, serve them, and make du'a: رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
  • "The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the parents." — Tirmidhi

Neighbours

  • "Jibril kept advising me about the neighbour until I thought he would make them an heir." — Bukhari
  • Share food, protect their honour, tolerate their faults
  • Never let a neighbour go hungry while your pot is full

With children

  • The Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandchildren openly: "Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy"
  • Keep promises to them — they learn trust from your word
  • Teach by playing, by story, by example — never by humiliation
  • Greet children with salam — the sunnah of humility

Cleanliness

  • "Purity is half of faith." — Muslim
  • Wudu, ghusl, miswak, clean clothes, tidy homes
  • Remove harm from the road — it is a branch of faith

Anger & forgiveness

  • "The strong is not the wrestler — the strong is the one who controls himself in anger." — Bukhari
  • Angry? Sit down; still angry? lie down; make wudu
  • The best: pardon when you are able to punish

Smile & ease

  • "Your smile for your brother is charity." — Tirmidhi
  • "Make things easy, do not make them difficult"
  • The heaviest thing on the scales: good character
